Solidarity
Chandra
Talpade Mohanty makes an argument in her article “Under Western Eyes Revisited:
Feminist Solidarity through Anticapitalist Struggles”. Mohanty discusses how “in
the U.S. the women movement became conservative”. In this article she argues
about how feminism can be seen through different perspectives, such as how
women of color can see “white feminism”. As she goes on to talk more about
feminist solidarity she makes a point to mention that women around the world do
two-third of the world’s work but only receive one-tenth of the world’s income.
I think it is important to note the inequality regarding a women’s work. It
seems like a women’s work is valued less than a man’s and some people may not
recognize this inequality. It’s important that Mohanty mentions how “privilege
nurtures blindness to those without the same privileges”.
Sometimes
the main cause for being blind to the way society treats certain groups of
people and how other groups have an advantage is the fact that people fail to
realize their privilege. Mohanty is committed to building feminist solidarity across
the borders. It’s important to recognize one’s privilege and understand how
that privilege is an advantage.
Throughout this passage Mohanty is discussing and analyzing
a paper she had written a while before. In summary, she wants women to have a
feminist like agreement globally, important not to fall into the views of the
religious fundamentalist which are rooted into masculinist and racist rhetoric.
The understanding of one another will help feminist to work together for the
same cause of equity.
